I am so old that I remember when the AMA and their ethicists backed  the idea of getting organs from Anencephalic babies 40 years ago: The problem? These kids have a brain stem, so it means they don't meet the brain dead criteria, and if allowed, it is a quick ethical slide into using people in comas for organs (something the ethicists have also been trying to push for 30 years) as one can see from this proposal in Lancet in Nov 1997. This met opposition as this letter from Lancet in 1998 shows:

new plague vaccine?

 the same ones who gave you covid vaccine are now planning a new vaccine for the Plague.

Few docs in the USA have ever seen a case, but there are a couple eases each year on the Navajo or nearby reservations because it is carried by prairie dogs.

the usual infection is a bite and then you develop huge enlarged lymph nodes (bubos hence the name bubonic plague).

usually it is treated with common antibiotics, but this report says the bacteria is becoming resistant to them.

What is worrying is that if it goes to the lung, it can cause a pneumonia that is easily transmitted to those nearby, and can kill you within 24 hours.

The article mentions that there has been a plague vaccine for over a century:

The first plague vaccine was developed in 1897 by bacteriologist Waldemar Mordechai Wolff Haffkine, who tested it on himself. This early vaccine was widely used in British India, with an estimated 26 million doses distributed between 1897 and 1925, reducing plague mortality by 50-85%. He was hailed as the “the Jewish Jenner” (Jenner having created the smallpox vaccine), as Haffkine also developed a vaccine for cholera.

When the bubonic plague hit Bombay in October 1896 with a mortality rate double that of cholera, the Indian government asked Haffkine to assist, and he commenced work in a crude laboratory and assumed the daunting task of developing the world’s first vaccine against plague. Amazingly, working almost entirely by himself, he succeeded in developing a vaccine that was ready for testing only three months later and, again, he first tested it on himself on January 10, 1897. Soon after he announced his successful results to the authorities, plague broke out at Bombay’s Byculla House of Correction. He conducted a controlled test there, the results of which were that the majority of deaths were among the unvaccinated.

 

Only China and Russia have licensed a live bubonic plague vaccine, which is based on an attenuated Y. pestis strain. However, this type of vaccine is associated with some adverse effects and does not provide long-term immunity.

the bad news? It takes a few shots to give you immunity and some people just don't develop antibodies. 

  Following the primary series of 3 injections, about 7% of individuals do not produce PHA antibody, and a few fail to develop a titer of 128, the level correlated with immunity in experimental animals. PHA titers should be determined for individuals who have an unusually high risk of infection or who have a history of serious reactions to the vaccine in order to govern the frequency of booster doses. Such testing can be arranged through state health departments. Since plague vaccination may only ameliorate illness, whenever a vaccinated person has a definite exposure, prophylactic antibiotics may be indicated whether or not an antibody response has been demonstrated.

I should add: usually it is sporadic cases, so one doubts it would turn into an epidemic nowadays.

Biological warfare research programs begun by the Soviet Union (USSR) and the US during the Second World War intensified during the Cold War, and in the 1960s both nations had active programs to “weaponize” Y. pestis.

This fad started after I retired to the Philippines and stopped practicing medicine, but you know, in 40 years of being a physician, I never saw a case. Maybe because I worked with the poor, and the fad seems to be ore common in upper middle class white folk. Or maybe it is because of the autism epidemic means these kids are more vulnerable.

Prevalence of lack of social and emotional support was elevated among transgender adults.

What are the implications for public health practice? Addressing the threat to mental health among sexual and gender minority groups should include consideration of loneliness and lack of social and emotional support...

statistics suggest the breakdown of family ties is the background for this:

Within the corresponding demographic categories, prevalences of loneliness and lack of social and emotional support were respectively highest among those aged 18–34 years (43.3% and 29.7%), those with less than a high school education (41.1% and 36.3%), those who never married (45.9% and 34.7%), and those with household income below $25,000 (47.9% and 39.8%); prevalences were lowest among non-Hispanic White adults (29.6% and 20.1%) and those who had two adults living in a household (27.4% and 19.1%).

 

Loneliness was significantly more common among women than among men (33.5% versus 30.7%), whereas lack of social and emotional support was more common among men than among women (22.3% versus 26.1%).

 

The prevalence of loneliness was significantly higher among adults who identified as gay (41.2%), lesbian (44.8%), bisexual (56.7%), or something other than gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight (50.7%), than among those who identified as straight (30.3%).

I wonder if the statistics would be similar here in the Philippines, where gays and trans are part of the extended family, and where the hard core gay culture does not have an anti normal bias as it does in the USA... 

why assisted suicide is a danger to the black and disabled community

As access to healthcare, services and supports are being stripped from disabled people around the country, we cannot continue to push forward with assisted suicide laws.

Cuts to funding for home care services, as well as reduction or elimination of eligibility to those services, combined with racial and disability disparities and discrimination in healthcare, will lead to those being deemed to be terminal to feel that they have no choice but to ask for assisted suicide.

Lack of access to home care givers due to workforce shortages, with workers unable to work enough hours and earn a livable wage, will further compound this. As a disabled Black person, I am alarmed at the negative impact that the normalization of assisted suicide will have on Black disabled, in particular, because contrary to what assisted suicide proponents say, assisted suicide is all about disability.

,,, According to the Oregon data (Oregon was the first state to enact an assisted suicide law), the top five reasons people request assisted suicide are: loss of autonomy, decreasing ability to participate in enjoyable activities, loss of dignity, feelings of being an emotional or financial burden on family and loved ones, and loss of control of bodily functions, such as incontinence and vomiting. These are all disability related reasons that can be addressed with services and supports, not assisted suicide.

We Blacks are overwhelmingly against assisted suicide, but there’s an organization called Compassion and Choices that’s going into Black communities trying to convince us that assisted suicide is a good thing and that it’s a right. That’s how they bamboozle us by couching it in those terms, because we know what it feels like not to have basic human and civil rights.

Compassion and Choices, once known as The Hemlock Society, is an organization formed and led by middle and upper middle class whites. This demographic of white people overwhelmingly support assisted suicide. Compassion and Choices hires middle class Black staff to come into our communities to spread the lie about assisted suicide because they know that we’re more likely to listen if information comes from someone who looks like us. As a result, some middle class and wealthy Blacks are falling for this farce.

As assisted suicide becomes normalized, racial disparities in healthcare will mean that Black patients will be more likely to be written off as terminal and steered towards ending our lives. Being disabled compounds this. Disabled people also experience health disparities because doctors quite literally devalue our lives, don’t want us as patients and don’t believe that we are treated unfairly.

Add being Black to that, and the risks of being written off as terminal in a state where assisted suicide is legal, rises exponentially.

In the face of rampant healthcare inequities, it’s no surprise that assisted suicide is rarely used by the Black community. We fight to live. We fight to get access to treatment. We fight for end of life treatment. We fight for medical care that most white folks take for granted. Black people, wake up

When I worked for the IHS we once sent a lady with frontal lobe syndrome (alert but partially paralyzed, with paradoxical crying when she was happy, something that disturbed the other patients. She also needed a feeding tube) 

 So we asked a neurologist about the best medicine to treat this (antipsychotics, or maybe anti seizure medicines or even beta blockers which are used in small doses for behavior outbursts in the brain damaged).

Instead, the neurologist without examining the lady except for a short glance, took the entire hour to pressure the family into removing the feeding tube. The family, who were Native Americans, kept quiet and did not respond (this was a cultural response to not saying no). But a cousin, a nurse, who was more westernized, at the end of the meeting turned to the doctor and said they wouldn't kill their relative, because Indians, unlike you white folk, don't kill our elders.

Indeed, their handicap was seen as another path that the Great Spirit gave them to walk, and often our patients in the nursing home were considered as being on the other side, i.e. able to see spirits and intercede for us.

and as assisted suicide is seen as the treatment for the sick and handicapped, the next step of course is for medical personnel to help them along, since the medical profession now sees death as a good outcome for people who are vulnerable. In the USA this is racist of course, but the mindset is already there in the UK, where N.I.C.E. guidelines stress keeping treatment cheap.

Japan produces 1st pigs designed for organ transplants

The original genetically modified pig was produced by U.S. biotechnology company eGenesis. In September 2023, PorMedTec received cells from the pig and produced cloned fertilized eggs. The eggs were transplanted into the uterus of an adult sow, and pregnancy was confirmed.,,,

 

In 2022, the University of Maryland announced it had transplanted a genetically modified pig heart to a patient with end stage heart failure. The patient died after about two months, but the operation attracted a great deal of attention as a step closer to realizing xenotransplantation. The university performed a second pig heart transplant in September 2023, and the patient died 40 days later. The University of Alabama and New York University have reported a total of five studies involving transplants of kidneys from genetically modified pigs into people who were brain dead. Revivicor Inc., a subsidiary of United Therapeutics Corp., a U.S. company, also produces genetically modified pigs for transplants of hearts and kidneys. In January this year, eGenesis announced that it had conducted a study in which a genetically engineered pig liver was connected to a brain dead person. The company said no rejection was observed during a 72-hour observation period. Normal pig organs are usually immediately rejected when transplanted into humans. To overcome this problem, eGenesis modified 10 different genes in the pig.'

 The Inquirer has an article about China growing organs in pigs.

you can go and read the entire article, which sounds more like propaganda than science and if you look beyond the headlines, it is a very preliminary experiment.

Chinese scientists made a world record for growing the first-ever humanized kidneys in pigs. In other words, they have figured out how to create organs in pigs, potentially helping those who need transplants.

We could use this method to produce vital body parts instead of waiting for donors. Still, the project requires further research and development for real-life applications.The experts admitted their experiment has several flaws, but it may pave the way for better healthcare.

This is a very preliminary experiment, and the article goes into the details.

But should you worry?

yes. Because an organ grown in a pig will pick up pig viruses, and the person getting the organ will be exposed to these viruses. And it will increase the chance of the viruses mutating to a fully human version that could kill people.

The available data suggest that risks of xenotransplant-associated recipient infection are manageable and that clinical trials can be performed safely. Possible infectious risks of xenotransplantation to the community at large are undefined but merit consideration.

Porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERVs) are integrated in the genome of all pigs, and some of them are able to infect human cells. Therefore, PERVs pose a risk for xenotransplantation, the transplantation of pig cells, tissues, or organ to humans in order to alleviate the shortage of human donor organs. Up to 2021, a huge body of knowledge about PERVs has been accumulated regarding their biology, including replication, recombination, origin, host range, and immunosuppressive properties. Until now, no PERV transmission has been observed in clinical trials transplanting pig islet cells into diabetic humans, in preclinical trials transplanting pig cells and organs into nonhuman primates with remarkable long survival times of the transplant, and in infection experiments with several animal species. Nevertheless, in order to prevent virus transmission to the recipient, numerous strategies have been developed, including selection of PERV-C-free animals, RNA interference, antiviral drugs, vaccination, and genome editing. Furthermore, at present there are no more experimental approaches to evaluate the full risk until we move to the clinic.

MIT Tech review notes that a pig heart recipient did get infected:The gene-edited pig heart given to a dying patient was infected with a pig virus The first transplant of a genetically-modified pig heart into a human may have ended prematurely because of a well-known—and avoidable—risk.

The presence of the pig virus and the desperate efforts to defeat it were described by Griffith during a webinar streamed online by the American Society of Transplantation on April 20. The issue is now a subject of wide discussion among specialists, who think the infection was a potential contributor to Bennett’s death and a possible reason why the heart did not last longer.

Essentially this is experimenting on a child, who cannot give his permission to be experimented on. And what happens if it doesn't work? Will they simply abort the kid or wait until he is born to do it?

This is the same problem as we see in test tube babies.

When the first such baby was conceived, they asked the "smiling' pope what he would say to her parents, and he said something like congratulations on your child.

But the technology behind this distorted having children on many levels.

One: it made having a child a right. 

Two: it ignored the risk to the child (IVF children have a high rate of miscarriage and problems).

Three: because it is expensive, doctors will implant several embryos, and then abort the extra ones. 

Four: like birth control, it removes the link between sexuality and having children, so the problems forseen by Paul VI about artificial contraception have come true, and this is just one furthur step on that path.

Five: it commodifies having a child.

Nowadays you can pay a woman to carry your child for you. This exploits poor women who carry the child. One reporter went to the Slums of Manila and asked a tricycle (taxi) driver is he would mind if his common law wife would do this for money, and he said no problem. She got angry and corrected him: I even care if I lose my cell phone. How would I feel about losing a child that I carried for nine months?

Ironically, they can't be used for stem cells etc. (thank the Lord: because a mom who okayed her child to be experimented before it is killed )

The sexual revolution didn't start with the pill or Human Vitae: It started in the USA with easy divorce, meaning women had no guarantee they wouldn't be discarded. Then welfare made it easy for women to discard abusive, lazy, or just boring husgands. Then welfare and the change in public opinion made it possible for women to have babies out of wedlock, leaving men out of the picture completely. Then since sex wasn't about babies and families, so why not gay sex, perverted sex, polyamory for pleasure, etc.

In the case of fixing a genetic problem, Catholics would oppose it, because even if the first case no life was taken, because it interferes with the normal pair bonding in marriage where having children is considered something good: The old phrase was the fruit of the womb.

In a world with chemical pollution being opposed by green movement, hardly anyone discusses the hormones and manipulation in IVF.

Heck they don't even discuss the problems of hormones for trans kids (I took some hormones for gynecological problems. The emotinal side effects are real, and then there is the metabolic problems etc.).

But that's another problem to be discussed at a later date.

One Health: a call for ecological equity

The notion that the wellbeing of an individual is directly connected to the wellbeing of the land has a long history in Indigenous societies.

Define Ïndigenous societies. Indigenous societies are not a monolith. Give an example with pros and cons. And don't overlook the fact that many of them have left these pristine environments to live and intermarry with others. And don't overlook that many of them use slash and burn techniques or overgraze the land. And don't overlook that their lifestyle is only "sustainable" due to high maternal child mortality, and don't forget the kidnapping of wives and infanticide in those Amazon tribes so beloved by Pope Francis.

Nowadays, the term One Health has become an important concept in global health.

The One Health High-Level Expert panel defines One Health as “an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. It recognises the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent.”

True, but this is also rhetoric of the ecology minded, and again the devil is in the details of exactly what they mean to implement to do this. 

On Jan 19, we published a new four-part Series online on One Health and global health security, which analyses current understanding of potential public health emergencies and explores how effective adoption of One Health could improve global health security. Although the Series focuses on pandemic preparedness,

so  basic public health. And how they are the saviors who will impose their plans to "ïmprove global health security"

One Health goes way beyond emerging infections and novel pathogens; it is the foundation for understanding and addressing the most existential threats to societies including antimicrobial resistance, food and nutrition insecurity, and climate change.

again, rhetoric. And lumps microbial resistance with food insecurity and climate change as threats to society.  

Modern attitudes to human health take a purely anthropocentric view—that the human being is the centre of medical attention and concern.

why yes. Because we are humans who are endowed by the Creator with certain rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And because medicine from ancient times has been about treating the sick. You want to do environmental stuff, fine. But it is not medicine. (emphasis mine).

 

One Health places us in an interconnected and interdependent relationship with non-human animals and the environment. The consequences of this thinking entail a subtle but quite revolutionary shift of perspective: all life is equal, and of equal concern.

Ah so here we see the rhetorical trick: we need to take care of the earth (following their guidelines) to stay well, but hey, human lives are not more important than wild animals. (we in the Philippines saw this type of thinking when an alligator killed a school girl and the locals trapped him. The westerners lamented the action of the locals who didn't respect the animals dignity. As for the school girl, hey, she was only a poor Filipina girl so who cares. A similar attitude can be found in Nat Geo specials about tiger or crocadiles killing people in India: more concern about the animals than the poor villagers). 

This understanding is fundamental to addressing pressing health issues at the human–animal–environment interface.

For example, providing a growing global population with healthy diets from sustainable food systems is an urgent unmet need. It requires a complete change to our relationship with animals.

Actually, despite the propaganda, starvation deaths have gone down.

Indeed, anyone involved in farming could see it is green policies that are going to cause famine: until the recent man made fertilizer and fuel shortage, blamed on Covid and Putin but actually due to green policies that stopped fracking of natural gas in the US, and of course pushing the Ukraine war instead of trying to make peace there. And of course, the greens opposed the original green revolution (that requires fertilizer to grow these crops) and who are now opposing GM crops that would enable less use of pesticides and could also increase protein in the crops to enhance nutrition.

The EAT-Lancet Commission takes an equitable approach by recommending people move away from an animal-based diet to a plant-based one, which not only benefits human health, but also animal health and wellbeing.

Translation: You will eat bugs and like it. A top down tyranny not only telling you what to eat, but insisting you be happy with this man made crisis. And why do I suspect bird flu killing the chicken industry and African swine flu killing pigs and Foot and Mouth disease killing ruminants are examples of failure of these health minded people stopping these epidemics, because they want to implement low protein vegetarianism on the world. Kwashiorkor anyone? 

The COVID-19 pandemic provides an important example of the need for a One Health approach.

Analyses of the successes and failures in managing the pandemic have prioritised health systems and the provision of vaccines and antivirals.

Fair enough. 

But understanding the causes of the pandemic demands a broader ecological perspective. This lesson has not been fully learned and so we remain susceptible to future lethal emerging infectious diseases.

The Series recommends the involvement of more environmental health organisations to better integrate environmental, wildlife, and farming issues to help address challenges relating to disease spillover.

WTF? 

Covid was not a disease spill over from an animal. It was virus manipulated by man (actually a woman scientist) doing gain of function research. And through carelessness, it leaked out of the lab,

To make things worse, not only did the Chinese government and WHO try to deny there was an epidemic, and later saying yes there is an epidemic but it's not infectious, and then yes there was an epidemic but hey it came from a bat in a wet market (just ignore the lab doing gain of function experiments on the covid 2 virus). Indeed, Lancet was part of this coverup: Despite Lancet's attempt to silence the whistle blowers by allowing the head of Ecohealth to insist that covid was a disease spillover from bats, and if you even hinted that maybe the lab was the origin, you would be silenced.

Now we come to the really chilling part of their Humans are not more important than animals point of view.

One implication of a One Health approach is the need to reduce human pressure on the environment—an important medical intervention in itself.

Translation: we need population control of all those poor people who want to grow food and whose farms diminish the area of wild animals who look so nice in Nat Geo TV shows, and a pristine habitat that looks so nice on our instagram posting  when we visit as eco tourists.

So Mrs Bill Gates is using money to push contraception on Africans and the West of using the WHO to push contraception on and abortion as a human right.

Take antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Driven by antimicrobial use and misuse in human, animal, and environmental sectors, and the spread of resistant bacteria and resistance genes within and between these sectors, AMR inflicts a huge global toll. An estimated 1·2 million people died in 2019 from antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections with another 4·95 million deaths associated with bacterial AMR globally. Only by applying a One Health approach can action to address AMR be achieved.

yes, a problem, and excess use of antibiotics in the animal industry is a topic  that is discussed by farmers. But it is the modern factory farm methods of raising chickens, pigs, cattle, and fish that lets poor people to have access to cheap protein. People on traditional low protein diets tend to die a lot from infectious diseases, especially Tuberculosis.

Lancet might estimate that 1.2 million people die of antibiotic resistant diseases, but please don't ignore that 250 thousand of these deaths are because of counterfeit drugs or vaccines that are commonly sold in their world countries: And this is a problem of corruption and crime that could be stopped.

e Health networks are largely situated and resourced in high-income countries. The current One Health architecture of institutions, processes, regulatory frameworks, and legal instruments has led to a fragmented, multilateral health security landscape.

As the second paper in The Series points out, a more egalitarian approach is needed, one that is not paternalistic or colonial in telling low-income and middle-income countries what they should do. 

For example, demanding that wet markets be closed to halt an emerging zoonosis might be technically correct, but if it does not account for those who make their livelihoods from such markets, One Health will only worsen the lives of those it claims to care about. Decolonisation requires listening to what countries say and what their needs are.

well, the need of the Philippines is basic infracstucture and jobs. 

As the global economic crisis continues (The World Bank forecasts a sharp downturn in growth and soaring debt that will hit developing countries the hardest), One Health needs to be implemented sensitively.

yes, the wrong headed plans of the elite to handle the Covid crisis and stop the use of fossil fuels etc. are all economic decisions made by those in charge of the world.  But apparantly that won't stop you.

The reality is that One Health will be delivered in countries, not by concordats between multilateral organisations, but by taking a fundamentally different approach to the natural world, one in which we are as concerned about the welfare of non-human animals and the environment as we are about humans.
